European and North American universities dominate QS World Rankings 2024 with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology( MIT) securing the top position for the 12th time in a row.
The QS World University Rankings 2024 have been blazoned- and Europe has claimed half of the top spots in the top 10.
The periodic assessment now in its 20th time- draws on the analysis of17.5 million academic papers and the expert opinions of over 240,000 academic faculty and employers from across the globe.
Europe claimed five out of the top 10 positions, while English- speaking universities dominate the upper situations of the rankings with perfect scores in orders similar as academic character, employer character and faculty/ pupil rate.
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology( MIT) in Cambridge, United States, secured the top spot with a indefectible overall score of 100 for the 12th successive time.
The University of Cambridge in the UK follows nearly before, claiming alternate place with99.2 points, while original rival the University of Oxford secured third place with98.9 points.
Harvard University took the fourth spot with a score of98.3, and Stanford University ranked fifth with98.1 points.
In Europe, the top 10 universities for 2024 are the University of Cambridge(99.2) which was alternate worldwide; the University of Oxford(98.9), third worldwide; Imperial College of London(97.8), which took sixth place worldwide; ETH Zurich(93.9) 7th overall; and University College of London(92.4) which was 9th in the world.
Taking sixth place on the European mainland is the University of Edinburgh in the UK(86.1), followed by the Université PSL Paris, France(85.8), the University of Manchester(82.2), École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne( EPFL), Switzerland(80.4) and the Technical University of Munich, Germany( 80).
The overall score of the prestigious ranking is reached by considering nine pivotal criteria academic character, employer character, faculty- pupil rate, citations per faculty, transnational faculty rate, transnational scholars rate, and, for the first time this time, transnational exploration network, employment outgrowth and sustainability.
The new pointers “ reflect the shifts in advanced education that have passed over the once two decades, similar as the growing significance of sustainability, employability, and exploration collaborations, ” said Quacquarelli Symonds, the establishment critic behind the ranking.
What trends do the rankings show?
Advanced education has experienced significant changes over the once two decades.
” One of the first changes we noticed( in the once decades) was this really adding focus on employability from scholars, ” said Dr Andrew MacFarlane, QS Rankings Manager, adding that this led them to strengthen the employability focus.
“ Scholars are leaving( university) with advanced debt than ever in a really competitive global job request, ” he said.
As the ranking celebrates its 20th time anniversary, one trend in which they take “ immense pride in is the adding inclusivity of our rankings, which illuminates the global distribution of academic excellence ”.
Between 2018 and the 2024 edition, there’s been a considerable increase in the representation of Asian, Latin American, Middle Eastern, and African universities in the World University Ranking. In 2018, the regions reckoned for 37 per cent of the ranking, in 2024, the figure has grown to 46 per cent.
China is getting a exploration mecca
China, particularly, has seen a pronounced rise in the rankings, driven by exploration sweats, MacFarlane noted.
“ They are the world’s largest patron of exploration, but decreasingly also largely cited exploration, ” he told Euronews Next, meaning the quality of the exploration being done in China has really “ pulled them up ” the rankings graduation.
Meanwhile, the United States and the United Kingdom, traditionally strong players, have endured a slight decline in rankings, but the dip does not inescapably mean they are getting worse. It’s also an index that other institutions worldwide are perfecting and closing the gap, MacFarlane says.
“ So, you know, the fastest runner is still the fastest runner, but someone differently is closing that gap on their time, ” he explained.
EU universities continue to exceed in internationalisation criteria
Encyclopedically, European universities continue to exceed in their global engagement, which is abecedarian MacFarlane says, “ to break down the world’s challenges, you are going to have to work across borders, break challenges together and be more transparent. And it’s Europe that is really leading the way on this ”.
Prominent EU institutions showcasing their strength in transnational exploration collaboration are Université PSL Paris( Paris Sciences et Lettres University) which took third place in the ‘ transnational exploration network order, ’ the Sorbonne( 4th), KU Leuven and Ghent University in Belgium( 6th and 8th independently), and Université de Montpellier in France( 9th).
“ So, you might be seeing this kind of adding dominance in exploration volume in East Asia in cooperative exploration and transnational engagement, ” McFarlane noted, “( but) Europe( is) absolutely shining important brighter in that in that case ”.
