- EU/EDUCATION:
Increasing student loans to support access, quality and mobility
in EU education
On 22-23 January, Governments, academia and representatives
of the banking sector met in Luxemburg to discuss the role of
student loans in promoting access, quality and mobility in EU
education and training at an International Policy Conference on
Student Lending organised by the European Investment Bank. The
cost of attending university varies significantly across Europe
and the availability of financial support for access to higher
education is not uniform. Participants at the conference shared
experience on existing student loan programmes, examined strengths
and weaknesses of the systems, and discussed the potential for
increased co-operation at EU level. Currently, the European Investment
Bank helps to finance student loans in several EU countries and
is willing to expand its operations. To increase university attendance
and access, providing students with equitable financial support,
the European Commission will therefore continue to work with Member
States and the European Investment Bank to explore options to

- Clio
archeology prize - Site of Tell Feres AL Sharqi (Arab Republic
of Syria)
After having studied for a long time the appearance of one of
the first great historical civilizations in Mesopotamia - in the
alluvial plain that separated the courses of Tigris and the Euphrates,
Jean-Daniel Forest had to leave Iraq, in war since the American
invasion in 2003, to relocate the scene of his investigations
towards Northeast Syria. The objective was to rebuild, in this
northern part of the fertile zone of the Near east, the process
that witnessed the transition between the simple farmer communities
of the first half of the 5th millenium B.C. (corresponding to
the culture called “North Obeid”) and the already
existing urban society at the beginning of the 3rd millenium (such
culture “Ninive 5”). With his colleague from CNRSR.
Vallet, searched for, after 2004, a place susceptible to provide
information that allowed to respond to the problem thus posed.
