MayDay
2008
Last year, Blue Shield Australia circulated a flier electronically
and asked that people print it and post it on notice boards to raise
awareness about disaster preparedness. The flier contained suggestions
on what people could do about being more prepared for disaster.
We suggested that one or more of the suggested steps be taken during
the month of May, whereas the American program focuses on 1 May
only. For 2008 Blue Shield Australia has arranged for a series of
workshops to be delivered through the Australian Library and Information
Association pillar body. Titled ‘Disaster Planning for Cultural
Collections’, the workshops will be presented by esteemed
Conservator, Mr Kim Morris, between May and September 2008 in six
Australian cities. Practitioners from any field of cultural heritage
are encouraged by ALIA to attend a workshop.

Day for Monuments and Sites 2008 - Religious Heritage and Sacred
Places
The International Day for Monuments and Sites was created on 18th
April, 1982, by ICOMOS and later approved at the 22nd UNESCO General
Conference in 1983. This special day offers an opportunity to raise
public awareness concerning the diversity of the world’s heritage
and the efforts that are required to protect and conserve it, as
well as to draw attention to its vulnerability. Each year, ICOMOS
proposes a general theme, this year’s theme being “Religious
Heritage and Sacred Places”. The organizers of events are
invited to reflect upon this theme, but it is not obligatory to
follow it. Please find below a calendar of events sorted by country
which includes events organized first and foremost by ICOMOS National
Committees, but also by independent organizations that wish to mark
the International Day for Monuments and Sites with a special event.

Launch
of Archaeomap
The Archaeomap project – for Archaeological Management Policies
– kicked off in the town of Palerme, on the Italian island
of Sicily, on 7 December. Financed by the European Commission to
the tune of 480 000 euros, the project foresees the establishment

heritage. Over the next two years, the archaeological treasures
of ten pilot sites will be studied: the Aegadian Islands off the
northwest coast of Sicily and the Sinis Peninsula on the west coast
of the island of Sardinia (both in Italy), the island of Pharos
in Alexandria (Egypt), Gibraltar (UK), Empuria on Spain’s
Costa Brava, the town of Villefranche-sur-Mer (France), Salonika
