Temporary
exhibition: 1931, foreigners in colonial times
From May 6th to September 7th, 2008. Cité nationale de
l’histoire de l’immigration. Paris, France
The exhibit "1931" evokes the situation of foreign and
colonial immigrants in metropolitan France in 1931. In this inter-war
period, two contrasted images prevail: on one hand, the glorification
of the French colonial Empire and its "civilizing mission"
with the colonial exhibition of Bois de Vincennes; on the other,
the presence of 3 million foreigners in France who make it the first
immigration country in the world. Visitors can immerse in the "tunnel
of time" to question the links, or lack of links, between colonial
foreigners in France in 1931. In the form of a theater, visitors
are invited to discover the dark side of the stage of the colonial
exhibition. Visitors enter behind the scenes of the exhibition to
discover a French social reality away from the show offered in the
Bois de Vincennes.
