Master Course in "World Heritage at Work" Accepting Applicants
A Master Course in "World Heritage at Work" has been created
by the Universita degli Studi di Torino (Italy) and the Politecnico
di Torino in collaboration with the UNESCO World Heritage Centre.
It is intended to contribute to improved management of World Heritage
sites through preparing managers and site practitioners to be cultural
entrepreneurs, creative agents of their local systems and promoters
not only of conservation but also of income generation and job creation.
The programme is intended for professionals involved in the management
of a World Heritage site. The course will take place from 15 June
2008 to 14 June 2009, and is divided into three cycles. Candidates
who are interested should fill in an application form (available
on the website below) and submit it by e-mail or fax no later than
10 June 2008.

The
biodiversity of the Seychelles shown in Paris
The Museum of natural history will host an exhibition on the Aldabra
atoll, biodiversity paradise. On the occasion of the world Day of
biodiversity, May 22nd, visitors will be transported to the heart
of the islands, as described by the Museum, by means of an initiation
route through at a life-size scale, interactive terminals, sound
recordings and samples of the fauna and flora, among them five giant
tortoises. The coral atoll of Aldabra, presented to the Humanity
by the republic of the Seychelles as UNESCO’s World heritage
site in 1982, has never undergone colonization of men…

Fire
damages recently restored Liverpool landmark
A fire tore through the Bluecoat Art Gallery in Liverpool, United
Kingdom early Tuesday morning, just two months after extensive renovation
works. The building is the oldest in Liverpool and part of the Liverpool
- Maritime Mercantile City World Heritage site, inscribed on the
World Heritage List in 2004. The extent of the damage must still
be assessed but seems to be concentrated in the kitchen and café
area...

An
exhibition on the cultural landscape of the Loire Valley
This exhibition, open from 10 to 30 May and then in July and August
at the Maison du Parc naturel régional Loire-Anjou-Touraine
(Loire-Anjou-Touraine Regional Natural Park Centre), offers an interactive
journey through the World Heritage sites in the Loire Valley. Mission
Val de Loire is curating this exhibition for the Centre and Pays
de la Loire regions which presents the idea of a cultural journey
as it applies to the World Heritage of the Loire Valley. Open to
everyone, and offering several layers of meaning, it forms part
of our ambition to share and raise awareness of the values behind
inscription on the World Heritage list...

portuguese) Plano prevê sustentabilidade do Centro Antigo
de Salvador
A UNESCO e o Estado da Bahia assinaram em 22/04, em Salvador, projeto
de cooperação técnica para a elaboração
de um plano de sustentabilidade do Centro Antigo da capital baiana.
O documento, assinado pelo Representante da Organização
no Brasil, Vincent Defourny, pelo governador do Estado, Jacques
Wagner, e pelo secretário de Cultura, Márcio Meirelles,
tem vigência de dois anos. Segundo Defourny, o acordo objetiva
a valorização permanente do acervo material e imaterial
que qualificou a região como Patrimônio da Humanidade.
“Pretendemos contribuir para orquestrar as ações,
programas e planos para a região, numa perspectiva de sua
reintegração à cidade como local de morar,
de trabalhar, de usufruir a cultura e o lazer”. Patrimônio
desde 1985, o Centro Antigo abriga alguns dos pontos mais tradicionais
de Salvador, como o Pelourinho.

Fire
threatens Garajonay World Heritage site, Spain
Firefighters have been struggling since last weekend to prevent
a fire from spreading into Garajonay National Park, situated in
the middle of the island of La Gomera in the Canary Islands archipelago.
The blaze, which may have been started accidentally by a farmer
clearing his land, had already destroyed 700 hectares (1,750 acres)
of farmland and woods...
