Great
explorer and Humanitarian far welled in New Zealand
Renown environmentalist, explorer and humanitarian, Sir Edmund Hillary
passed away this month sparking a week of mourning in New Zealand.
The first person to successfully climb the world’s highest
peak – Mt Everest - Sir Edmund was to dedicate his life to
preserving the Himalayas and enhancing the qualify of life of locals
. Even towards the end of his own life – Sir Edmund focused
upon the Himalayas, and specifically the Sagarmatha National Park.
This UNESCO World Heritage Site is home to the highest peak in the
world, several rare species (such as the snow leopard and the panda)
and is also the ancestral homeland of the Nepalese Sherpa people.
Only two years ago Sir Edmund wrote to the UNESCO World Heritage
Committee to support a bid to protect the Himalayan peaks against
climate change...

jewel evokes 25 anniversary of Havana as Heritage of the Humanity
In 1982 the Historical Center of Havana and its system of fortifications
was nominated as Cultural heritage of the Humanity by UNESCO. In
order to celebrate the 25 anniversary of this declaration, the Office
of the Historian of the City coins in three metals –gold,
silver and copper – the commemorative medal made by designer
Ernesto Javier Marimón, which shows on one side, the map
of the city, with rays of lilght that emphasize its later development
and on the other, the identification of the UNESCO and the Office
of the Historian. This medal was presented in December 2007 by the
Historian of the City, Eusebio Leal Spengler. For more information

Heritage
mediation training for guides in the Val de Loire: a successful
first event
The course ran from 28 to 30 November 2007 and offered the 16 participants
the opportunity to understand and assimilate the concepts and values
that underpin the World Heritage label and the specific characteristics
of the Val de Loire site, helping them to incorporate these elements
more effectively into their mediation activities with the general
public.

Convention: Chandigarh, India: South Workshop the urban Conservation
of Chandigarh, 18-21 December 2007
The world heritage Center within the framework of the Nederland’s
Fund and the France-UNESCO Convention, in association with the office
of the New Delhi UNESCO, the School of architecture of Chandigarh
and the Administration of Chandigarh has organized a Workshop on
the urban conservation of Chandigarh from 18 - 21 December 2007.

Convention: Val de Loire, France: Training Mediations for guides,
28-30 November 2007
This training, organized by the Val de Loire Mission and the UNESCO’s
world heritage Center and started by the international Institute
rivers and heritage, was directed at guides, entertainers and mediators
of the castles, monuments, natural sites, Maisons de Loire, museums,
urban sets and cities of art and history of the world heritage site
Val de Loire.

Algiers,
Algeria – Zabid, Yemen: support to requests of the world heritage
Center
Funds of the France-UNESCO Convention reserved to emergency situations
or to programmed requests of the world heritage Center have not
made available of the Union of the central Arab States, specially
for:
- Algeria: Organise an urgent mission to evaluate the draft
of construction of the underground in Algiers, which will happen
under the property inscribed in the world heritage List.
- Yemen: "the house of Zabid, outbreak and smoothness
in decoration". This work attemps to document by means of images
and drawings the decorative heritage of the city. Considering the
current conservation conditions of the building, the book is also
a valuable means of documentation for professionals and students
and can be used as conservation/restoration handbook.

Namibia for your first World Heritage Site !
International recognition of the outstanding prehistoric and historic
imagery of Twyfelfontein, legacy of Namibia’s “huntergatherers”.
Powered by the Namibia National Commission for UNESCO, the successful
nomination of Twyfelfontein as a World Heritage site was achieved
through the painstaking and highly technical hard work of the National
Committee on the Implementation of the World Heritage Convention
of 1972 and collaboration with regional and international rock-art
specialists.

and preserving Lesotho’s cultural and natural heritage
The Protection and Presentation of the Ha Baroana Rock Art site
project – implemented with Norway extrabudgetary funding -
included historical research, archaeological, geographical topographical
and integrity survey, capacity building, study tours; production
of educational materials including a documentary; development of
an interpretation centre; artistic painting on walls of the interpretation
center, community diagnosis; and participatory consultative and
awareness raising meetings on Cultural, Natural Heritage and Biosphere
Reserves...

Kongo-the city to be unearthed and preserved (ANGOLA)
UNESCO provided support for the elaboration of Angola’s tentative
list for the World Heritage List, directly linked to the International
Round Table on Mbanza Kongo and the 3rd conference on the General
History of Angola. Both events were extensively covered in the Angolan
media. The Mbanza Kongo round table took place from 19 to 21 September

Safeguarding
Natural Heritage in Central Asia
Despite its unique and very rich resources, the natural heritage
of Central Asia is under-represented on the World Heritage List.
Over the past years, a number of sites have been considered for
World Heritage nomination, for example Saryarka – Steppes
and Lakes of Northern Kazakhstan. UNESCO is now also supporting
preparation of the nomination of West Tien- Shan as a transboundary
natural heritage site involving Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan...

World
Heritage sites: Human Origins at Olduvai Gorge
Olduvai Gorge, dubbed the ‘cradle of mankind’, is part
of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area in northern Tanzania. The site
was designated as a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1979 for its
outstanding ecological and geological value.
