MoU
Eindhoven / Call for Partners: RE-ARCHITECTURE: Lifespan rehabilitation
of World Heritage Sites
This research project aims to contribute for the development and
application of a universal design process (method and implementation)
that accurately trace the "change of state" of immovable
cultural assets. Such "change of state" can be caused
by its natural aging, but also by environment; or even, by deliberate
interventions. This last case, as often more intrusive and manageable,
shall be our research field... Contact:

Renewed
fighting threatens mountain gorillas in Virunga National Park
Heavy fighting broke out again on December 3, 2007 between the DRC
army and rebel forces of general Nkunda north of the city of Goma,
in North Kivu. Heavy shelling and gunfire is taking place in the
immediate vicinity of the heart of the gorilla sector in the Virunga
National Park and World Heritage site. The renewed fighting poses
a serious threat to the survival of the mountain gorillas, flagship
species of this World Heritage site, of which only an estimated
700 remain in the wild. Since the beginning of this year, 10 gorillas
have been killed in Virunga and two more are missing. For more than
3 months now, park authorities are unable to enter the gorilla sector
and ensure protection and monitoring of the gorilla families.

regrets U.K. government's decision to cancel A303 road improvement
scheme for Stonehenge World Heritage property
UNESCO regrets the U.K. government's decision to cancel the A303
Stonehenge Road Improvement scheme on the basis of cost concerns
and hopes that another solution will be found to relieve traffic
congestion around the World Heritage property of Stonehenge, Avebury
and Associated sites. UNESCO's World Heritage Centre, which has
been actively involved in finding a solution to this problem in
recent years, will provide a report on the situation to the World
Heritage Committee at its next meeting in Québec, Canada
in July 2008.
