mondial a porté sa superficie de 54 à 82 km2.

vignoble en terrasses, inscrit au patrimoine mondial de l’UNESCO
Le Comité du Patrimoine mondial de l’UNESCO, réuni
en Nouvelle-Zélande, a décidé d’ajouter
la région de Lavaux sur la liste des biens inscrits au patrimoine
mondial. Cette inscription est le résultat d’une collaboration
fructueuse entre l’Office fédéral de la culture,
l’Etat de Vaud et l’Association pour l’inscription
de Lavaux au patrimoine mondial de l’UNESCO (AILU).

New
Episodes of Patrimonito's World Heritage Adventures available
Two new episodes, the fourth and fifth in the series Patrimonito's
World Heritage Adventures, are now available. Featuring Patrimonito,
the World Heritage mascot, these cartoons enable young people to
transmit a message to other youth and the general public about World
Heritage values. In episode 4, Patrimonito sensitizes young people
to the erosion from weathering that is damaging the stone surfaces
of the thirteenth-century Rock-Hewn Churches, Lalibela (Ethiopia).
In episode 5, he lends a hand to young would-be archaeologists working
on excavations to help preserve the treasures of the Historic Monuments
of Novgorod and Surroundings (Russian Federation).

Patrimonito
Storyboard Competition 2007
Following the launching in December 2006 of the Patrimonito Storyboard
Competition organized by the World Heritage Centre in coordination
with the UNESCO Associated Schools, the contest results are now
available. Four hundred students from the Republic of Congo, the
Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda and Uganda registered to take
part in the Competition. They submitted one hundred fifty-nine storyboards
carrying the theme on the protection of the World Heritage sites
of the National park of Virunga (DRC), the Rwenzori Mountains National
Park and the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park (Uganda).

Saved from Wildfires
The UNESCO World Heritage Centre is relieved that the wildfires
around the city of Dubrovnik (Croatia) are now under control and
would like to pay tribute to the firefighters who fought the blaze.
Reports from Dubrovnik indicate that the Old City, designated a
World Heritage site in 1979 and then extended in 1994, was untouched
by the fire...

Mission rallies support for the preservation of the mountain gorillas
of the DRC
A mission of experts led by UNESCO has rallied the support of the
authorities of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), the United
Nations Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUC) and
of local communities in the preservation of the endangered mountain
gorillas of Virunga National Park.

voices concern over fate of Virunga National Park gorillas
The Director-General of UNESCO, Koïchiro Matsuura, is concerned
over attacks perpetrated against the mountain gorillas of the Virunga
National Park in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and
has called on the national authorities to adopt urgent measures
to brings the killings to an end.

mission to help save threatened gorilla population in Virunga National
Park (DRC)
A mission by UNESCO and the World Conservation Union (IUCN) will
leave for the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) on 11 August
to investigate the apparently senseless slaughter of mountain gorillas
in Virunga National Park inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage
List in 1979 and on the List of World Heritage in Danger in 1994.
These killings are a blow for the preservation of mountain gorillas
and a setback for conservation efforts at the World Heritage site.

Budget
supports World Heritage listing in Tasmania
Preparation work for the bid to list six Tasmanian places as part
of the World Heritage nomination of convict sites received a healthy
injection of funds in this year’s State Government Budget.
$250,000 will be used to finalise the preparatory documents needed
as part of the bid. The six Tasmanian places being considered as
part of the World Heritage listing nomination include the Port Arthur
Historic Site, the Coal Mines Historic Site, Maria Island’s
Darlington precinct, Cascades Female Factory, Brickendon Estate
and Woolmers Estate...
