ABSTRACT

Hanoi will be 1000 years of age by 2010. As many other metropolis in the world, Hanoi is full of memories presented through its historical urban landscapes. These contain within themselves many layers of cultures and histories.
Economic renovation policy in Vietnam in recent years has been major motivation enhancing the faster urbanization toward regional and global integration. During this process, Hanoi and many other urban areas of Vietnam is gradually losing their typical characters and being dissolved in line of development.
The modernization and the preservation urban characters are the two issues having mutual organic relationship. In the other hand, these also are the most exactly measurements of success level of urban development solutions and urban civilization as well. Historic urban landscapes located mostly in old and ancient areas are important elements of urban designation image implanting in memories of residents and visitors.
Having an important role in the creation of urban image, these areas seem are not properly awareness or not in correct way of concerning, due to clouded by the ink problem of the pressure of development economic as well as urban issues such as traffic jam, in undation, pollution..... Those are the sources of forgetting and invading day by day of historic urban landscapes.
With trend of integration, theories of urban design, urban conservation and experience of the world, giving us new awareness about the historic urban landscape. The role and impact of historic urban landscape to the image of city forced us must be concerned and had effective measures to keep and promoting them in the process of urban development.
Writing focused to some main points as following:

- Theoretical and practical perspectives on historic urban landscape of Hanoi.
