ABSTRACT

This paper promotes the visual integrity of historic urban landscapes based on historic heritage stereo views, as an essential 3D documentation tool.
On a global scale currently about 1 Million historic analog heritage stereo views showing urban landscapes still wait for digitization, an almost forgotten cultural treasure, to be excavated.

Consequently representative rare masterpieces of heritage stereo views of historic landscapes of different countries will be presented, including samples from Vietnam. These samples give an idea of the brilliance and of the outstanding documentary value of Heritage stereo views. Beside a survey of worldwide archives of heritage stereo views this paper describes successful applications of stereo views showing historic urban landscapes.

In addition this paper gives advices for optimum digitization rates for historic analog stereo views. It also describes the enhancing of the radiometric and geometric image quality of the original historic heritage stereo views, including e.g., the digital removing of speckles and scratches.

Also part of this paper is the presentation of a complete list dealing with the virtual 3D-visualization-methodology, including "Down-Under" and Felix-Solid-State type 3D-screens to replace the 2D-PC-(screen) at least partly.

Though concentrating on historic heritage stereo views, this paper also promotes recent 3D photography of urban landscapes. For this purpose the rather flexible digital X-Lite stereo camera as used from a 10 m telescope promise a great future.

Within this paper more than 20 open research topics in the field of heritage stereo views are also stated, including initial steps for solutions.
