ABSTRACT
The design and development of Chandigarh is landmark event in the modern architectural experiment of last century. Various methods and
techniques have been used by the architects and sociologist all over the world in the last century to understand nature of the urban
development in the developing society. These investigation though not conclusive in many cases, provide lot of information and data to
understand the Urban renewal, regeneration and its implications in the over all development of the society. At present developing society is
at cross roads in historical continuum and modern day integration with west. The Chandigarh experiment provides the opportunity to
study the sustainable development initiative, especially in the context of urban housing against the background of the other development
initiatives. The example is used to understand the urban character and composition of the historic urban landscape development in
Chandigarh along with its impact for sustainable development. The time calls for Analysis of the Historic modern landscape in the urban
evolution context. This paper tries to identify those parameters of the sustainable development and analyze them for societal benefit
and resource generation. Though the analysis is qualitative and an attempt has been made to quantify it and thus making open for
empirical understanding. The interpretations drawn could be the first step towards the goal of having explicitly described strategy for future
course of suitable actions in use for visual.
